This year was the inaugural season of the True Youth Learn-to-Sail program at Lake Merced. Utilizing US Sailing's Sailing Smart course materials, this four-week instructional course (offered in three sessions) served inner city youth with boating safety, boat maintenance, and beginning sailing proficiency. For pictures of just some of our graduates, look here.

Our Curriculum
The standard course of 30 hours, taught in 10 3-hour classes, builds on a foundation of boating safety, boating courtesy and a respect for the environment. We have lengthened our course by 6 hours to include a review of the history of sailing in San Francisco, with a field trip to Hyde Street Pier, and a class at the end to review and practice the basics of racing a buoy course.

America True's True Youth Program brings the challenges, excitement, and accomplishments of sailing to disenfranchised youth, and provides a long-term engagement linking these skills to further education and vocational outlets. Through a combination of after school programs and on-the-water sailing outings, we will reach over 2500 5th - 12th graders in 2002. More Details
